Living the Dream?!
“Bonjour? Cava? Je M’appelle Simone .... uhm ..... uhm .... Je veux une “Pipe” pour Le Foundation.” Ooops !
When – the first three months we were here 2004.
Where – Builders merchants on a Monday morning
Who - full of French men getting the coming weeks materials
Result Lots of stifled but obvious laughter and I definitely heard a few snorts -
The problem: Well set aside the fact the text does not convey my Thames Estuary accent whilst pronouncing English words in what I think is a French accent, but those fluent French Speakers amongst you will realise the definition of Pipe in French is a sexual act (I will let you make your research as I want to keep it clean!) and not the evacuation pipe I needed!
Solution The chap at the counter realises my mistake and goes on to help albeit with a definite smirk.
Conclusion “Patrick?!” (Our French architect)
“Why did all the men laugh at the at the Merchants when I asked for a pipe for the foundation” (still using a French accent for my English.
“Oô la!” C’est pas possible! “Lots of laughter “I cannot tell you I must explain to, Clinton” (in a much better French accent pronouncing English words than me) some whispering and maybe a few gestures pursued and finally, the penny dropped. Noooooo!!!
And so began our Journey into our life here in France.
Note to myself - there are better ways to gain notoriety and further to that, clearly not all English words translate!
True story - The shame!
